I have been noticing a little extra room in our freezer these days. We're down to just a few jars of plum jelly, one of strawberry, one apple butter and one pumpkin butter. There's still a good bit of basil pesto in there, because, um, I did go a little crazy with the basil pesto.
Seeing that space feels good... like we've made room for the goodness, and adventures, dirt wonder to come.
That space means that soon I get to smell bubbling jelly on the stovetop and remember. It always surprises me how that smell can take me back.
So it was with a heart full of clean, open space, ready for filling up with sunshine that we went on our nature walk yesterday. We saw two monarchs, three sulphurs, a white checkerspot and a swallowtail. And then we saw the thing that makes each and every Texan heart sing "SPRIIIIIIIING!"

The first bluebonnets.
Oh there just ain't nuthin in the whole wide world like the first bluebonnets. In fact, did you know that it was bluebonnets that inspired the name of this here blog?
It's true.
There's this little old house that I like to dream about restoring to glory. I'd fix her up and put a big iron gate at the end of the drive that would read "Blue Yonder." But that gate would always be open and people would come and eat pie under the shade trees and take photos of fat babies in the flowers.
Every spring, on our way to the strawberry farm, we pass her, and gasp - surprised, all over again at the sight of her surrounded by fields of bluebonnets - like a battered, but still strong, ship in a great blue sea. I wrote a little
about her here.
Anyhow, we got back from our walk hot and sweaty and grubby and it occurred to me what that freezer space was meant for...

Oh it is officially spring for sure if we're making smoothie pops. And now I'd better get to making some
more yogurt!
